Reflection: This year, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the 2013 CABE Conference in Long Beach. I participated in workshops, heard from famous educators and researchers in the field, and gained valuable insight into the most effective ways to engage students in a bilingual classroom. More specifically, I was exposed to the latest research in how to build teachers' cultural competence as a way of challenging teacher assumptions. The presenters emphasized how teachers should be aware of not imposing their beliefs, ideas and assumptions on their students' cultures. The highlight of the entire conference for me was attending the seminar led by the famous José Luis Orozco about ways in which teachers can incorporate songs, chants, repetition, and dance into their curriculum in order to increase students’ phonological awareness. His vision for bilingual education and his life story truly inspired me to try and integrate the arts into my future classroom. I left the CABE Conference feeling a renewed sense of excitement and motivation to enter the field of bilingual education.
